Having a therapist come to your home is a different proposition to walking into a spa, and the uncertainty stops a lot of people booking the first one. Here is exactly how a Big Thum appointment runs, start to finish, so there are no surprises.

Before the appointment

You book by message or phone. We ask what treatment you want, your area, the time you would like, and whether you have a therapist preference. If you are not sure which treatment suits you, describe how you feel instead and we will suggest one.

This is also when to mention allergies, injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy or medication. Some treatments are not suitable in certain circumstances, and knowing in advance means we can recommend something that is.

When your therapist arrives

Your therapist arrives with a professional massage table, fresh linens that are used for you and nobody else, and premium organic oils. For Thai massage they bring a floor mat instead of a table.

Setting up takes a few minutes. You choose the room, the lighting and the temperature, and whether there is any music at all. Plenty of guests prefer silence.

The consultation

Before anything starts, your therapist will ask about pressure, which areas you want worked on, which you would rather they avoided, and anything medical they should know. This conversation shapes the entire session, so it is worth being direct in it.

If you want firm pressure, say so now. If you are nervous, say that too. Both are common and neither is awkward.

During the treatment

You undress to your comfort level in private, and you stay covered by towels throughout. Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any point. This is standard professional practice and it does not change because the treatment is happening at home.

You can speak at any time. Asking for more or less pressure, more time on one area, or a warmer room is expected rather than an interruption. Equally, you do not have to make conversation. Most guests go quiet within the first ten minutes.

Falling asleep is completely normal, particularly during aromatherapy or lymphatic drainage. Your therapist will not take it personally.

Afterwards

Take a few minutes before standing up. Drink water. If oil has been used, leaving it on the skin for a few hours lets it absorb, so there is no need to rush to the shower.

Your therapist packs the table and linens away and leaves the room as they found it. That is the whole appointment.

The questions people are too polite to ask

Can I request a female therapist? Yes. State your preference when you book and we will confirm what is available for your slot before it is fixed.

What if my home is small? You need roughly two metres by two metres of clear floor. That is less than most people expect.

Do I have to tip? There is no expectation. If you want to, that is entirely your choice.

What if I need to cancel? Message us on 0524447520 as early as you can and we will move your appointment.

Is the therapist actually qualified? Every Big Thum therapist is professionally certified for the treatments they perform. Hijama is carried out only by practitioners specifically certified for it.

Where we visit

Big Thum covers Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, with the same therapists and the same standards in each. If you are still deciding what to book, the questions page covers most of what guests ask first.
